The Sega Game Gear, launched in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in North America, was Sega’s bold entry into the handheld gaming market. Unlike Nintendo’s Game Boy, it featured a backlit, full-color screen and TV tuner accessory, making it feel futuristic at the time. While battery life and bulk limited its success, the Game Gear offered a portable way to experience Sega franchises like Sonic and Columns. For many who owned it, the handheld represents a wave of 1990s gaming innovation—late nights under the covers with a glowing screen, trading cartridges with friends, and the thrill of carrying “real” console games anywhere.
